Willingdon was the base for the local village of the same name in George Orwell’s Animal Farm whilst Jevington lies between Polegate and Friston. Both providea a range of services with pubs, cafes and shops. Jevington but is founded upon the historic church which dates back to around 900AD and provided refuge from maruading Vikings.
The area was well known for smuggling with Jevington Jigg, a reknown smuggler, storing contraband in the cellar of The Rectory after it was unloaded at nearby Birling Gap, at the foot of Beachy Head.
During the Second World War Winston Churchill visited Jevington as part of final demonstrations of the Churchill tank above the village in 1940.
Any trip to Jevington and Willingdon should also take in The Long Man of Wilmington, the mysterious guardian of the South Downs, who has baffled archaeologists and historians for hundreds of years after being discovered in 1710.
